REACTION - Prime Matter Is A Tasty Mix Of New IP And Returning Classics
It’s always a treat to see new IP being pitched from a brand new publisher, particularly at the start of a new generation. The timing of Prime Matter’s unveiling, courtesy of Koch Media, is certainly ideal then, arriving just in advance of E3 season with a cavalcade of original titles and a couple of returning favourites. Although Payday 3 and the mention of Painkiller will understandably turn heads, it’s the fresh meat that has made us raise an inquisitive eyebrow (ooo matron!)
The Last Oricru looked like a fairly simple medieval RPG, but the reveal of full campaign co-op, and the gameplay opportunities this creates (particularly in boss battles), made it one to watch. Codename Final Form also came in hot, looking like a dystopian sci-fi Doom, and despite being a working title, appeared quite polished. Echoes of the End (a fantasy RPG with a big narrative focus), and Scars Above were both particularly interesting, with the latter giving off some serious Control vibes.
It’s a strong statement of intent, and nice to see another AA publisher enter the mix; Focus Home and THQ Nordic have both done well in this space as of late, carving a niche for themselves as a neat point of differentiation between huge budget games and smaller indies. We’re looking forward to the future, baby!
