REACTION - The investment in Rare’s new dev space gives me cautious hope for Everwild

Into the wild blue… barn.

We still have absolutely no idea what Everwild is shaping up to be; visually arresting teases are all well and good, but the lack of communication from Rare concerning the elusive titles future gives off unfortunate vapourware vibes. However, in a glimmer of hope, a recent Gamesindustry.biz deep dive into their newly constructed, environmentally conscious development barn shows Microsoft are willing to double down on the studio following their barnstorming success with Sea of Thieves.

It’s a fantastic piece, with an insightful and revealing look into the methodology behind the design of this jolly new office. It also shines a light of positivity on Rare as a studio, who are sharing this news amongst wider games industry turmoil around layoffs and lack of job security. The fact that such a significant financial investment is being made into an MS first party team is indicative of their attitude towards cultivating the studios they oversee.

It bodes well for Everwild’s future. You don’t scale up your development capacity just for Sea of Thieves’ seasonal updates. Moving forward with the idea that the project is still on track, and there hasn’t been some fundamental creative reboot behind the scenes, it hopefully won’t be too long before the curtain is lifted.

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
