REACTION - Speechless’ AI license is a step in the right direction, but too much uncertainty remains

Bleep blorp.

There is a tremendous amount of trepidation surrounding this misuse of AI within the games industry, particularly in relation to fair compensation for actors and the potential for it to be abused. There’s also the very real career implications that many are facing, where roles could conceivably be recast using extrapolated samples of previous performances.

It’s a complicated state of affairs, and something that is regularly being discussed. Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope in a potential solution being pitched by Speechless, an audio company built around AI usage and fair compensation for actors who participate. The use of royalty payments is certainly an encouraging move.

But there is so much potential for illegal sampling without appropriate permissions, and then there’s the wider problem of publishers and developers bypassing live talent altogether in favour of a cheaper alternative. It’s next to impossible to predict the developmental arc of this technology, but one thing is certain: this isn’t going to be a conversation that goes away.

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
