There have been so many games lately that have embraced cross play but failed to get the basics right. Hood is probably the most infamous example, with a shared matchmaking pool but segregated friend initiations, while stuff like The Division 2 still hasn’t been patched to support the feature.

It’s a lot of work, as evidenced by Apex Legends taking a hot minute to integrate cross progression in a title not originally designed to incorporate the feature. One recent victory on the cross play front is Battlefield 2042, which will not only allow PC, PS5, and Series X players to sync up and play together, but your progression and purchases will carry over between platforms as well.

The best part is the “opt out of PC” cross play toggle for console players, which therefore removes the headache of matching up against mouse / keyboard input, and avoid the prevalence of cheating in that space (here’s looking at you COD: Warzone). PS4 and Xbox One owners can also play together, but that is restricted to last gen consoles (which has a lower player count).

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
