REACTION - Battlefield 6 has got our attention, but they need to nail the launch

You gotta make that!

After 2042's muted critical reception and wonky design choices, the bar had been set pretty low for Battlefield 6's imminent arrival. Despite the lack of good will going in, it does seem as though sentiment is now starting to shift. However, the infamous phrase "we never anticipated the demand" has loomed embarrassingly over many recent Battlefield launches, to the point where it has become almost a parody of itself. They need to get it right out of the gate.

Everything else though is looking pretty dang positive. The renewed focus on destruction is a smart play after 2042’s obsession with indestructible shipping containers sabotaged that classic feel. Classes seem to be more or less preserved as you’d expect, with some appreciated traversal gear opening up the toolset. Being able to drag and revive allies out the line of fire, sprint while crouched, and John Wick roll out of danger are some additional flourishes that will keep things fresh.

More importantly than anything else is server stability, and the smooth implementation of cross play. The upcoming early access and open beta sessions for the next two weeks will give a good barometer of where they’re at, and the October release should on paper give Battlefield Studios the time they need to action any necessary fixes. We’re cautiously optimistic.

TARPS?

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.
