REACTION - LittleBigPlanet’s Sudden Server Closures Set A Worrying Precedent
After repeated instances of hacking and other unsavoury behaviour against LittleBigPlanet game servers, Media Molecule have today decided to recover the user creations from throughout the series and make them available in the PS4 version of the most recent mainline title. However, this move comes at a cost. The servers for all the games on PS3 and Vita have now been deactivated.
Now, while the option remains to experience user created content within the PS4 version, anyone still playing online via those original platforms are now permanently unable to do so, after months of instability and non functional services. Furthermore, Sony have pulled the plug immediately, with no warning of any kind.
This is cause for concern, and speaks to their willingness to simply end support for older titles on a whim with no prior notification. The fear of course is that this establishes a pattern of behaviour moving forward, which in turn raises reasonable questions around the nature of game preservation.
