COMMENTARY - Everyone’s Doing A Digital Event Now And We’re Absolutely Cool With It
As Geoff Keighley’s Nugget Filled Summer of Scoops (or NFSOS, if you’re “cool” like me) approaches faster than Sony’s turnaround on cross gen releases (hashtag SAUCE), it feels appropriate to take a minute before the madness begins and acknowledge that everyone is doing jolly digital events now and we’re totally fine with that.
It has been many an eve since the days of covering E3 press conferences where that was the be all and end all of announcements. Now, with the likes of Koch Media, Nacon, and even Netflix jumping on the bandwagon, alongside the usual suspects, it’s genuinely nice to see these publishers taking the reigns and strutting their stuff on their own terms.
Of course, expectations are running high, particularly for Microsoft who despite having an objectively excellent new console[s], strong hardware features, and Game Pass leading the pack, are crucially lacking in the games department. We know stuff is on the brew, but poorly directed CGI trailers just won’t cut it. Not when Sony first party has already done such a good job with software in this gen so far.
And of course, Nintendo will Nintendo. I’ll buy that Switch Pro, even though it’s my third most used console and that company makes me face palm. But I love Mario Tennis so all is forgiven. Except their game pricing is terrible. And all my joy cons are broken.
…
Praise be to NFSOS!
